Top 5 candidates to replace Dan Lanning

 By Caleb Jeanneret

Rumors are circulating that Dan Lanning is circulating in NFL HC circles.

Would he be great? Why wouldn't he be?

Will it happen? Almost certainly not

He has unlimited resources and doesn't seem to despise recruiting like Chip Kelly, but it is very fun to find coaches to take over for him. Here is my top 5 favorite candidates to replace him if he were to leave.

5. Will Stein- OC Oregon

The roster would be kept for the most part, and the offense is elite, it's just not as fun as some of the others below, but had to be mentioned.

4. Rhett Lashlee- HC SMU

One of the country's top offensive minds has successfully turned around SMU with a career record of 26-10 and currently has the Mustangs in the top 15 in their first year in the ACC. Before becoming the HC of SMU Lashlee was successful as the OC at SMU and Miami and would continue to build the legacy of great offenses at Oregon.

3. Curt Cignetti- HC Indiana

This would make the most sense, turning around a bottom program in Indiana in one year, has won everywhere (google him), and has proven that he can win in the Big Ten. The only reason he is lower than the next two is Oregon always going for the younger, high-intensity coaches, and Cignetti is already 63.

2. Lane Kiffin- HC Ole Miss

Would he take Oregon over Ole Miss? I would. Oregon has more resources, an elite conference, and a hotbed of talent on the West Coast. Kiffin has experience on the West Coast when he was the HC of USC years ago, would he go back? He was rumored to be in talks about the Nebraska job two years ago before they went with Matt Rhule. His resume as a play-caller speaks for itself, and if he can get players into Ole Miss, Oregon would be a breeze.

1. Kenny Dillingham- HC Arizona State

This makes more sense to me than anything. Dillingham is the youngest full-time coach in the country, has more passion than anyone, and has completely turned around Arizona State in two years from a bottom-feeder to a respectable P4 team, and went to ASU after spending one year as Lannings OC at Oregon. This would be a slam dunk, and Dillingham would be the HC for years to come.

Other names to consider:

Glenn Schumann- DC Georgia

Jedd Fisch- Washington HC

Chip Kelly- Ohio State OC
